“Lavette’s Choice” Featured at Sundance Film Festival

 In General

Over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, CCBF organizer Lavette Mayes joined Jason Hernandez and Johnny Perez for the premier of a series of animated shorts documenting their stories. The films focus on each person’s experience with a different part of the criminal justice system, and were created for the ACLU’s Smart Justice campaign.

CCBF posted bond to free Lavette from Cook County Jail in 2016 after 14 months of incarceration. Since then, Lavette has been active in the fight to end money bond and pretrial incarceration. The way in which she has taken her experience and used it to fight back has been an inspiration to all of us. We are so happy Lavette is part of our community. You can read her whole story here.

Take a look at the film documenting Lavette’s story and then head over the ACLU’s website to see Jason and Johnny’s stories.
