This is a reminder to all of us pushing for bail reform about exactly how high the stakes are. Jails literally kill people. Mr. Lopez House was in Cook County Jail on a series of retail theft charges–acts of survival that are often linked to substance dependence. There was no reason we as a society should have locked Mr. House in a cage in the first place, and now that cage has killed him. Rest in power, Mr. House.
